Our client, a leading STM publisher requires a new Article Revenue Product Owner.
The STM publishing industry is undergoing a revolution – with the global trend for scientific research to be made available free to the reader meaning publishers are rethinking and reinventing the way they generate revenue, publishers now need to be more creative than ever before, so this is an excellent time to join a global forward-thinking, innovative publisher.
The Product Owner to help to lead the fundamental re-wiring of the publisher's back-office systems and processes which is required to support this generational shift in the way they do business.
As Product Owner, you will be responsible for defining the vision and the future road map for the systems and processes the client relies on to support the revenue-making aspects of Open Access published articles. You will be responsible for the effective fulfilment of aspects including pricing, product creation, charging, invoicing, associated e-commerce and collections of OA transactions.
In the role, you will need to stay up to date with industry developments in OA and technological options and innovations – working closely with strategic decision-makers in the Publishing, Sales and Finance teams to provide insight on system capabilities and ‘the art of the possible’ in supporting business innovation and decision making.
You will also need to work closely with technology teams, and with the wider Product Owner community to ensure that article revenue requirements and processes are fully included and understood in the delivery road maps of production, peer review and finance systems.

The role would suit either an experienced Product Owner with a desire and aptitude to take on a more business delivery focussed and less technical PO position, or a candidate with a strong academic publishing background, including possible involvement in the issues surrounding Open Access and an interest in taking on product ownership responsibilities. Product ownership training, including on Agile delivery and Continuous Improvement can be provided to the right candidate.
Skills & Experience:
- Demonstrable understanding of customers and their requirements in the STM Publishing market.
- Demonstrable understanding of the industry trends and challenges of moving to an Open Access model in Publishing.
- Demonstrable data-driven approach to decision making, utilising validated customer feedback and insights as well as business metrics to make decisions
- Business Analysis skills, including mapping process workflows, system diagrams, system and process visualisations
- Experience of continuous improvement and ideally Lean methodology.
