Product Manager – Research

Our client, a leading international publisher, requires a new Product Manager, Research, who will drive the future development of digital research information services for the business.

You will explore concepts for new products, and drive the development roadmap for existing offering to the research and academic market. You will develop strong external relationships with customers, end-users and other stakeholders to design new and better ways to support the research community. Where appropriate, you will identify and seek funding to support open science initiatives.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Strategy and vision for research information services. Drive strategy based on trends in the research sector; defines a future roadmap to position the client at the forefront of research and evidence within the sector.
  • Product development. Identifies and develops ideas for new products within research information services, including the expansion of existing products based on market trends and feedback. Develops business cases and plans for investment, and translates these into project plans and roadmaps.
  • Monitors and owns the commercial Key Performance Indicators of research information business.
  • End-user and customer requirements
  • Works with colleagues to ensure the research proposition is compelling and competitive to secure revenues from the higher and further education sector, and associated government research funders and donors; supports the development of sales materials and presentations and commercial pitches; helps scan for prospective bids and tenders from funders/donors and prepares responses (as appropriate).

Skills & Experience:

  • 5 years’ experience working within the research information sector, which may include scholarly publishing or a publishing technology company.
  • Excellent knowledge of the scholarly research marketplace and the latest thinking in terms of discovering and collaborating on research.
  • Experience of working with internal or external platform providers.
  • Commercially focused with experience in delivering new products within a budget or to
  • deliver specific outcomes that support ROI.
  • Experience working in a project management/delivery environment (Prince2, Agile etc)
  • Prior knowledge of the agricultural sector is not essential.

3x Executive Editor, Journals

Our client, a leading society publisher, requires 3x Executive Editors to lead, set and implement the editorial strategy for a portfolio of journals.

The Executive Editor positions have a key strategic role within the department and is responsible for leading, setting and implementing the strategy for a portfolio and the individual journal strategies within it. The successful candidates will have a high level of external contact with the relevant research communities and will use this market information to develop strategic priorities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Setting, developing and implementing the portfolio and individual journal strategies and delivering KPIs in terms of usage, market share, quality, reputation and customer service.
  • Developing the best authorship and readership for the journals, through networking, personal contact, commissioning, attendance at conferences, site visits and roadshows etc.
  • Managing, leading and motivating a team of up to 5 direct reports, and a number of remunerated external Associate Editors and wider base of Associate Editors.

Skills & Experience:

  • Significant experience in STM journal publishing, including commissioning; an excellent understanding of the peer review process, editorial policy and marketing.
  • A good honours degree in science (chemical sciences normally preferred). Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong influencing and negotiating skills.
  • Proven ability to lead and motivate a team.
  • Good organisational and time-management skills are required together with the ability to work under pressure and to meet deadlines.
  • Willingness to travel extensively nationally and internationally.
  • Up-to-date knowledge of and passion for the chemical sciences.

UK Sales Manager – Higher Education

Our client, a leading Educational publisher, requires a new Sales Manager Higher Education for the UK & Ireland. 

The Sales Manager can be home based and reports to the Head of Sales for UK & Europe. You will be responsible for developing and implementing sales strategies and effectively managing the UK sales team to maximise sales and meet the company billings goals across the HE & FE product portfolios.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Achieve billings targets for the UK through effective line management of the 3 inside sales consultants and 6 field-based consultants, ensuring each consultant maximises their territory sales and billing goals though achievement of call rate targets and effective resource mapping to their institutions.
  • Effectively recruit, lead, manage and develop a high performing sales team across the UK
  • Contribute to the development of a coherent sales strategy for all territories in the region by supporting the Head of Sales for UK & Europe in preparing, maintaining and present sales forecasts, and devising strategic methods for expanding sales and implementing a customer care strategy for further growth
  • Effectively implement sales and business strategy by handling specific new business or renewal proposals (Enterprise and Digital) and making commercially sound price quotation recommendations in consultation with the Head of Sales for UK & Europe
  • Identify and contribute to the genesis of new business development opportunities by actively exploring commercial opportunities to develop partnerships with HE institutions and affiliated organisations at institutional, faculty and departmental level across the region, whilst monitoring competitor activity across the region, including wins, sales strategies and personnel

Skills & Experience: 

  • 5 years’ sales experience, ideally within the information or publishing industry
  • An understanding and practical application of consultative selling
  • Ability to negotiate large institutional deals
  • Able to manage and develop outstanding sales personnel (recruiting, coaching, training, motivating and managing)
  • Strong track record in collaboration with colleagues at all levels and across business units/geographically
  • Excellent interpersonal, negotiation, presentation and communication skills
  • Demonstrable ability and track record in communicating with and selling to senior decision makers within HE and FE institutions
  • Must be a highly motivated and well organised individual
  • Ability to demonstrate and champion digital assets
