Our client, a leading society publisher, requires an Associate Director for eBooks & Conference Proceedings.

The Associate Director (ebooks and Conference Proceedings) is a key member of the senior publishing management team and is responsible for providing strategic direction and leadership of the ebooks and conference proceedings businesses.

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Designing the strategic plans for both programmes in conjunction with the Publishing Director.
  • Delivering the future growth plan for the ebook and proceedings businesses, including steering new products, services and partnerships within the portfolio.
  • Driving and implementing new initiatives and projects.
  • Analysing sales and financial data.
  • Analysing key publishing issues and trends in the disciplines and markets we publish for and feeding these into strategy and action plans.
  • Leading the global ebooks and conference proceedings publishing teams ensuring they are fully versed in the vision and growth plans for the programmes.
  • Managing, mentoring and developing the team.

Skills & Experience: 

  • Educated to degree level.
  • A qualification in the physical sciences (MSc or PhD) is useful for the role but not essential
  • In-depth knowledge and experience of commissioning, book publishing and the STM industry.
  • Direct experience of conference proceedings publishing is useful but not essential
  • Extensive experience of people management, leading and motivating large teams in a changing environment
  • Experience of the issues faculty, industry professionals, conference organisers, students and librarians are facing
  • Thorough grasp of the economics of book publishing
  • Familiarity with major open access (OA) developments and business models relating to books and conference proceedings
  • Experience in conducting market research to inform and shape product development or publishing strategy

Due to continued expansion, the business is looking to bolster their UK operations. 

This is an exciting new role to develop their data publishing programme from scratch. This is a strategically crucial role within the business. The successful candidate is likely to be academically and commercially exceptional. We are looking for a strong, forward-thinking business person with a passion for research and advancing its impact on society. 

Key Responsibilities include: 

  • Help define and scope best in class systems and processes for the data publishing programme 
  • Develop a forward looking strategic view, based on strong industry understanding of data, research, authors, and policy makers in major research output countries, using those insights to anticipate opportunities and drive the programme forward. 
  • Contribute more broadly to our Open Access strategy, which is concerned with making scientific research more transparent, collaborative and efficient, as part of an agile and focused team

Skills & Experience:

  • Educated to degree level
  • Experience of leading a data or clinical research journals
  • Either experience in managing, shaping and developing a portfolio of journals in different disciplines and with different publishing models (e.g. in-house and partnership); or a strong commercial, digital product and technology background with an interest in open access publishing.
  • Strong, proven strategic abilities, with experience of developing and implementing new business models, as well as having the ability to adapt the strategy as needed.
  • Excellent financial skills with the ability to forecast, budget, monitor and achieve growth.
  • Experience of operating at the most senior levels of business, including representing the team at Board and shareholder level 
  • A keen understanding of international markets, particularly relevant, major emerging markets.

The ESC publishes a dozen scientific journals, an array of textbooks and authoritative clinical practice guidelines in the cardiovascular field. It provides continuing medical education through webinars and classroom courses, and hosts the summit of cardiovascular science each August – ESC Congress – which attracts 31,000 heart specialists and delivers over 4,500 of the latest abstracts.

The ESC is looking for a talented Publications and resources Director to join its talented team. Reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer, the Publications Director will be a member of the European Heart House Directors team.

The successful candidate will be employed on a permanent basis at the European Heart House located in the south of France near Nice, in the science park Sophia Antipolis.

The Publications Director will direct operations by:

  • Overall coordination of the journals administration including the contact database
  • Development of new products such handbooks and textbooks online and paper
  • Relationship with the publishers and contract management
  • Driving the publishing strategy across the combined sciences journal programme and ensuring its effective implementation, aligned with the ESC strategy
  • Coordination of the production of ESC guidelines and position papers
  • Manage resources and direct opportunities to target acquisitions and gaps in the market for new product development

The ideal candidate will have:

  • PhD in Sciences or a higher University degree
  • Proven record of success in senior level management in the industry
  • At least five year’s senior level experience of management of people and resources
  • A wide knowledge and understanding of the publishing industry
  • A good understanding of the mutations this industry is going through, including technological, as well as the corresponding strategic implications
  • An understanding of financial management and wider management principles and techniques
  • Strong leadership skills
  • Excellent communication (both verbal and written) in English. French would be an advantage.

Our client, a global STM publisher is now looking for a Publishing Director, Open Research. This is an important role in the Open Research leadership team that will deliver against key objectives through strategic planning and execution. You’ll understand the changing needs of researchers and contribute to projects across the group.

As Publishing Director you’ll have overall budget setting and delivery responsibility for their leading platform open offer and will be responsible for the overall revenue, profitability and development of Open Access content on this platform. You’ll be responsible for the editorial and business development of 3 major journals.

This post will ensure a researcher view across the wider portfolio, providing community / scientific input on all of our publishing offers.  You’ll be a central advocate in promoting open science offering to the community.  Working closely with the wider team you will be a significant part of the company's open science ‘face’.

Key responsibilities:

  • On an on-going basis, review plans and activity from the community point of view
  • Represent the research community by providing input on new offers and product developments under development
  • Provide guidance, advice and support to the leadership team on research & community matters
  • Be an advocate for open science (and company products and services therein) through media, conferences, community engagement and outreach
  • Set and ensure delivery of budget and strategic priorities
  • Lead the publishing development across key journals ensuring its growth and profitability, whilst editorial standards are maintained
  • Liaise closely with colleagues to ensure that open access opportunities on the platform are maximised
  • Drive the growth and quality of the Communications Journals and ensure they achieve a distinct and profitable position in the market
  • Ensure that the editorial structure is sound, that journals grow as fast as they can and that new journals are given every opportunity of success
  • Develop new offers as appropriate to ensure that our OA offer remains at the forefront of the STM market
