Publishing Editor – Medicine

Our client, a leading STM Publisher, requires a Publishing Editor with expertise in medicine to form part of a new team in London. 

You will be responsible for the success of a defined set of journals within a broad discipline group and you must be comfortable in handling topics outside of your specialism. The primary goal of this role will be to develop a close working relationship with members of the academic editorial boards to further develop the journals within the portfolio.

Key Responsibilities:
Portfolio Management: 

  • Be the key point of contact for your Academic Editors and build a close working relationship with them
  • Prioritise journals for development and create as well as implement a strategy plan
  • Ensure journals are represented in relevant indexing services and prepare journals for acceptance by additional services
  • Develop knowledge of the research areas of your portfolio and use this knowledge to actively identify journal development opportunities
  • Work alongside your Academic Editors to increase journal visibility, submissions, and reputation within the field
  • Increase visibility and citations through commissioning and appropriate marketing

Special Issue Development: 

  • With the assistance of the Editorial Board, assess special issue proposals submitted to the journals within your portfolio
  • Give guidance to the lead guest editors to refine their call for papers
  • Support the lead guest editors in promoting their call for papers to prospective authors
  • Compile reports on the status of the special issues within your portfolio
  • Explore and implement methods to promote special issues once they are published

Skills & Experience:

  • A minimum of 1-2 years’ experience in the publishing industry
  • Degree in a relevant scientific discipline, ideally Medicine or Biomedicine.
  • Knowledge of peer review and the publishing process
  • An interest in Open Access publishing
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Strong organisational skills, with attention to detail
  • A positive and proactive approach to problem-solving in daily tasks
  • Able to work cooperatively with colleagues at all levels
  • A high level of computer literacy
  • Experience of working in a start¬up and/or tech environment desirable

Publishing Editor (Research Integrity)

Our client, a leading open access publisher, requires a new Publishing Editor (Research Integrity).

Reporting to the Head of Research Integrity as part of the Publishing team in the London office your tasks will include:

  • Contributing to Publishing and Research Integrity projects
  • Preparing and editing correction and retraction notices
  • Screening and editing Letters to the Editor
  • Preparing reports for institutions and contacting them
  • Consulting editorial board members
  • Contacting other journals/publishers
  • Checking plagiarism and figure duplication/manipulation
  • Investigations of authors, reviewers, editors, and Special Issues
  • Monitoring public channels for concerns about published articles
  • Cover for the Head of Research Integrity
  • Monitoring the workload of the Research Integrity team

Skills & Requirements:

  • A minimum of 1-2 years’ experience in the publishing industry
  • Degree in a scientific discipline
  • Exposure to or awareness of research integrity/publication ethics
  • Experience in a customer-facing role or using CRM software is preferred.

Our client, a global scientific publisher, requires a new Research Communications Manager, China who will manage a programme of author outreach to boost the profile and brand awareness of the company and their products.

As the job holder, you will use marketing and communication techniques in innovative and effective ways to improve awareness and engagement with our audiences in the region.

You will lead on both the marketing strategy and implementing activities to support the aims of the region. You will be confident in liaising with key stakeholders and providing reports and feedback on activities, bringing a focus on growing our customer database and contributing insight into successful marketing tactics and our competition in the market.

 key part of the role will require great collaboration skills, working closely with colleagues in Publishing, Marketing and Sales in China and in our offices globally. You will have an enthusiasm for meeting researchers and engaging with our authors.

The role will require travel throughout China and occasionally internationally.

Skills Experience:

  • Degree in the physical sciences essential. Higher degree (MSc or PhD) is highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of the academic/research environment in China and worldwide
  • A working knowledge of scientific publishing is desirable
  • Demonstrate solid knowledge and experience of marketing as well as working knowledge of a variety of marketing channels.
  • Ability to obtain and analyse market research and insights to create a clear and practical marketing implementation approach gaining buy-in from a wide range of colleagues.
  • Excellent communication and negotiating skills and the ability to make appropriate decisions and take prompt and effective action, if necessary, under pressure of time and circumstances, are essential
  • Must possess strong English and Mandarin communications (verbal and written) skills, including public speaking skills

The successful candidate will be responsible for the management, and ultimate growth and quality of the journals through content acquisition initiatives, as well as supporting and building relationships with the editorial boards and leading academics in the fields.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage the new journal portfolio
  • Devise and drive content acquisition and editorial strategies to ensure the growth and success of the journals

Journal Development Manager – Engineering & Technology

Our client, a leading STM Publisher based in London, requires a Journal Development Manager for Physical Sciences & Engineering.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the management, strategic development and growth of both journals through content acquisition initiatives, as well as building and leveraging strong relationships with the Editorial Boards of leading academics.

They will be responsible for pro-actively managing the journals’ performance and must show strong strategic direction to devise and implement editorial strategies to increase market share and build strong recognition for their portfolio, while creating new opportunities to drive key performance indicators.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage the Physical Sciences & Engineering portfolio and deliver ambitious targets and objectives.
  • Drive journal growth and development through Editor engagement, article collections and section launches, informed by competitor and market analysis.
  • Build strong relationships with high-profile scholars and pro-actively manage the Editorial Boards.
  • Represent the company to external stakeholders and promote the portfolio at international conferences.
  • Manage and lead two Journal Development Specialist(s) and supporting team members across multiple Editorial departments.
