IOP Publishing, one of the worlds most prestigious learned society publishers, requires a new Sales & Marketing Director, reporting directly to the Managing Director.

As Sales and Marketing Director you will set and deliver the global sales and library marketing strategy. As such, your primary responsibility is delivering the agreed revenues, profit, growth and market share, ensuring you are delivering the right mix in the right markets at the right margin.

The role provides leadership and direction to direct reports within the sales and marketing leadership team, ensuring it is effectively run to deliver the strategy, as well as providing leadership oversight to the wider sales and marketing organisation.

Success in this role will be achieved through effective interplay between functions, some of which may not be within the direct span of control of the jobholder such as Sales Operations which sits with the Finance Director and Author and Product Marketing which sits with the Publishing Director.

As one of the five executive members of the Board of Directors, the Sales and Marketing Director is integral to developing and driving the company's overall strategy and decision-making and is one of its key public faces.

Skills & Experience:

  • Educated to degree level
  • An active member of relevant industry associations

Head of Researcher Services & Networks – Japan

Our client, a leading STM publisher, requires a new Head of Researcher Services & Networks. This role is responsible for developing and delivering growth strategy for Japan to innovate and deliver on core and new researcher product and services.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Liaising closely with the Director, design and deliver a regional growth strategy to support the delivery of the wider strategic commercial objectives
  • Defining and delivering value into the regional research ecosystem (researchers, librarians, research institutions, funders and government) to deliver long-term revenue growth
  • Establish, maintain and develop high level relationships with key customer groups; researchers and research leaders, funders, societies and institutions, commercial, professional and academic as well as government and regulatory bodies 
  • Develop and maintain market awareness through business and industry publications, networking within research communities and research leadership.
  • Provide market feedback to the Director and broader Research Services senior leadership team regarding competitive offerings, market trends & prospect needs.
  • Understand how current and future market trends in the region impact our current and potential customers Delivery of Strategic Partnerships and Initiatives.
  • Monitor and report on KPIs including revenue, costs, overheads, usage and user behaviors to inform future strategic development.

Skills & Experience:

  • Experience working within the STM/Academic industry and in-depth knowledge of the Japanese market.
  • Strong commercial focus and experience in managing the P&L within a strategic business unit
  • An understanding of technologies, trends and developments in the areas of online publishing, scholarly communication and research
  • A firm grasp of strategic issues affecting the global research sector.
  • The ability to communicate and form strong working relationships and networks effectively at all levels, both internally and externally
  • Results-oriented with the ability to manage from strategic development to detailed execution

2x Territory Sales Director APAC

Our client, a global healthcare information company, requires 2 new Territory Sales Director. One to cover China & Japan and the other to cover Indonesia.

Reporting to the established Australian office, we need a motivated sales professional that has a network dealing with the hospital and medical sector within the territory. You will be responsible for building up the company’s presence within the region, selling content licenses to hospitals, developing agent and distribution channels and create a long terms strategy for growth in the region. This is a new role for the company as they move into the APAC market.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Create and implement a robust strategic sales plan for the region.
  • Identify and recruit a network of distributors or agents in the region.
  • Take personal responsibility for larger Consortia and National deals
  • Act as the ambassador for the business across the territory.
  • Proactively develop new ideas to increase sales opportunities across the whole
  • Develop and maintain systems to support the sales process • Prepare sales reports and analysis for internal review
  • Travel to major conferences and sales visits as necessary

Publishing Editor – Maths/Physics

Our client, a leading Open Access Publisher, requires a new Publishing Editor with a background in Physical Sciences to form part of a new team in London.

If successful, you would be responsible for the success of a defined set of journals within Physical Sciences. The primary goal of this role will be to develop a close working relationship with members of the academic editorial boards to further develop the journals within the portfolio.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Be the key point of contact for your Chief and Academic Editors and build a close working relationship with them
  • Prioritise journals for development and create as well as implement a strategy plan
  • Ensure journals are represented in relevant indexing services and prepare journals for acceptance by additional services
  • Develop knowledge of the research areas of your portfolio and use this knowledge to actively identify journal development opportunities
  • Work alongside your Chief and Academic Editors to increase journal visibility, submissions, and reputation within the field
  • Increase visibility and citations through commissioning and appropriate marketing
  • Work with the Content Development team on Special Issues

Skills & Experience:

  • A minimum of 1-2 years; experience in the publishing industry
  • Degree in a scientific discipline (Physical Sciences, computer science, mathematics or engineering background), further degree a plus
  • Knowledge of peer review and the publishing process
  • An interest in Open Access publishing
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Strong organisational skills, with attention to detail
  • A positive and proactive approach to problem-solving in daily tasks
  • Able to work cooperatively with colleagues at all levels
  • A high level of computer literacy
  • Experience of working in a startup and/or tech environment desirable
